Lines of Business
Ballast Mutual is designed to provide the following commercial liability coverages for qualified nuclear supply-chain participants:
- General Liability — Premises, operations, products, and completed operations exposures typical of vendors, fabricators, engineering firms, construction firms, manufacturers, and field services firms serving nuclear facilities.
- Pollution Liability — Coverage for pollution-related claims arising from the member’s operations, products, or completed work, subject to policy terms.
- Professional Liability (Errors & Omissions) — Protection for design, engineering, consulting, and related professional services provided to nuclear projects.
- Umbrella — Additional limits above the primary general liability, pollution liability and professional liability layers as needed to meet contractual requirements.
Admitted Paper for Contract Compliance
Coverage is issued on an admitted basis by a licensed, highly rated insurance company (Policy Issuer). Members receive a traditional insurance policy that satisfies the contractual insurance requirements of Department of Energy, utility, and prime-contractor counterparties. The Policy Issuer is the named insurer on the policy and the primary party responsible for claim payments to third parties.
Policy Structure Overview
Each participating member receives its own policy. Premium, Independent Account equity, and claims experience are tracked separately. The Policy Issuer fronts the coverage; Ballast Mutual (through Independent Accounts and the Group Account) and external backup insurance via reinsurance provide the economic risk-bearing capacity behind that paper.
